In 2025, River City Construction reaches a milestone that means more than just a number: 50 years of powering the community and beyond. These 50 years were built on humble beginnings, hard work, and the people who have carried our name with pride.
From a dining room table to a trusted name
Our story began in 1975, when William “Dwain” Edwards — after nearly 15 years in the powerline industry — decided to create something of his own. River City Construction was established at the dining table of a single-wide trailer, a true family-run business driven by determination and teamwork.
Soon after, a trip to Johnstown, Pennsylvania, helped the company acquire its first digger derrick and pickup truck. This opened the door to early contracts that helped River City establish its footing and secure its future.
Growth built on grit
As projects carried crews further from home, River City relied on the same ingenuity that still defines us today. When finding lodging was hard, the team transformed an old school bus into a makeshift camper, complete with a stovetop and beds, so work could keep going.
The company quickly outgrew the original trailer office and moved into a larger space, continuing to grow with the needs of customers and communities. By 1989, River City had become an S-Corporation, demonstrating momentum built the right way: through consistent effort and shared commitment.
Answering the call—then and now
Less than a year later, River City responded to help restore power to Cape Hatteras and the Outer Banks. The work that earned recognition and put the River City name in the papers. And that spirit of response remains a cornerstone of who we are.
After Dwain’s passing in 2016, his daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Edwards, continued his legacy by upholding River City’s commitment to leadership, safety, integrity, and growth. Under her guidance, River City has expanded rapidly and gained nationwide recognition for excellence and dedication.
Looking ahead with gratitude
Today, River City crews work across the East Coast, wherever the work and storms take us. As we celebrate 50 years, we’re proud of our history and even more grateful for our future. Thanks to everyone who makes River City what it is: our employees, customers, partners, and the communities we serve.
Here’s to the next 50, built on the same foundation that started it all: hard work, ingenuity, and doing the job right.
